The "start" folder just contains the elevator base that players spawn on when entering a level, and as such it can replace the current one with no problems. This elevator can actually replace the current one and still functions, although some animations need to be replaced as well to make it look right. Do you stack your Helm, Armor, and Shield against a particular threat or do. The "next" folder contains an active elevator, it displays the 'waiting on lift' icon between the lights where the energy price would be (before elevators were made free). While all of the current elevator's files are all stored in the "univeral"(sic) subfolder (with Shadow Lair elevators in "ultimateboss" instead), the folder still contains the subfolders "next" and "start" which both together contain a beta elevator design that somewhat clashes with the current game's art style, outside of Haven at least.
